SCD refers to a group of red blood cell disorders. Normal red blood cells are round and flexible. They contain hemoglobin (a protein), which carries oxygen in your blood. WebSickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that causes the body to make abnormal hemoglobin. This is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to all parts of your body. The damaged red blood cells block blood flow in small blood vessels. This causes pain and can damage major organs.
